525 Recuts were created for the Life Cycles Recut Contest. After all the dust had settled, 3 were chosen as the winners. The level of quality of the recuts blew most of us away and made the decision to pick winners a source of arguments between the panel. Here are your 3 winners...
not sure if everyone is aware but all the raw footage came with no audio. so the winning video had to go out of there way to record every bit of audio sound fx you hear. that's alot more difficult than just crazy editing. like befree said about the second video that song was in roam. how can you use a collective song for life cycles recut....
Hmm, I didn't think much of the overall edit (yes its much better than anything i can do but I mean relative to any other recuts) but if what you say is true then thats a decent amount of effort to go to. I was wondering why other the few others I watched hadn't kept in the bike sounds.
About the 2nd one: The Song was used in Roam! It was created around this video a lot of fake Accounts. The shaking transition is at some places too disturbing. He was too angry about the delay and he called Life Cycles team unprofessional. Sorry but this Video doesn't deserve the 2nd Place (maybe top 10). Outthere are way better recuts and with more professional handling! Its my opinion. Nevertheless its better than if I did one. I'm just too critical
LOL man to bad for you.. First i really don't care about the vote, just face it the team decide it not the vote... And what I called the team of the Life Cycles wasn't unprofessional I said that the information is needed. Nothing more and nothing less! And for final just one question where is the problem with the video? it's all that matters - this is the idea of the contest to see what the peoples can do with this frames no need of hate here or to be critical to anyone. You don't like it that's OKAY but why you need to make this way for everybody just no point in it, everyone has own taste own idea and that the point of the contest.
I watch them all and I am totally agreed with this top 3.The first one is really creative. And the third is so damn fun and also creative nice work and i hope there'll be more contest like this
The one who got first definently deserved it. I saw a premier of the movie( which is amazingly epic) and the winner vid perfectly represents the movie itself

congratz to the winners. personally i really enjoyed the 3rd one. the first one had the best overall quality but I enjoyed watching the 3rd one the most.

I did notice the time Delay, I can also see why they would be delayed. I still didn't go calling the people I entered a competition with "unprofessional". Besides, we're all mountain bikes for gods-sake! They were probably just riding!

Nikola-kj, Kaptainkeurk told this (...nice...nice...nice) cause he's a friend of mine and he was arguing in my way : winning videos are not exactly following rules. Problem is not with you but with judges, winners have done a really nice job.
Kaptainkeurk also says "we're not going to fight for a contest" and he is right, the most important thing is that we all are here cause we love MTB, and MTB way of mind is a cool way of mind.... You call the lifecycles team unprofessional, i dont care if you did but just stick to your guns. That is ALL I pointed out in my comment directed towards you, my hate comes from the fact that you were dissing the team and changed your attitude the second you won a prize.

personally, the one that got second place was my favorite. It had the best "editing" overall- I thought. The 3rd place one also must have taken a ton of time to edit- that was actually very impressive. Congrats to the Gambler winner though! sweet frame for sure
the second one had good editing ya, but the first place one went out and actually recorded sounds that matched the clips. that takes a lot of planning and skill
yeah i think they were both really impressive and showed mad skill, just in different ways. The first place winner had some real unique stuff like the riding sounds and the other audio that a lot of the others didnt, but the second one had super dope editing too I thought

3rd was best. 2nd was unoriginal and didn't stick with the "Life Cycles" theme. All that erratic shaking and shit is for THE MATRIX not a fukin sick bike movie with slow-mos through nature. 1st video was pretty standard stock IMO.
First one was good, I quit watching the second one beacuse my eyes hurt and that song has been used in pinkbike videos by every 12 year old since Roam came out, and the third one was just trying to hard. Seasons recut contest was much better.
So why are the videos coming out with like tutorials and talking. The Collective did it, it was cool, now leave it alone. Seriously A MAN, HIS BIKE, A TRAIL, A DESTINY PRESERVED BY NATURE AND STEEL, HARVESTED IN THE DEEPEST OF OUR SOULS, THAT CAN ONLY TAKE US HOME... hehehehehheheh I get it man we've all been there, but we don't need to hear it in all the videos nowadays.

What I meant was that I thought the 3rd was the best of the chosen top 3. I didn't think the 1st and 2nd place were particularly worthy of the podium so no... just because I thought 3rd was better than the others, it doesn't mean I think it was the best overall.

NR 1 I think the first one is all about resources, it is actually not that hard to record good audio it just takes some time and equipment.
NR 2 It does have good editing but I think it is somewhat boring that it has the standard music and action type editing and that the judge’s don’t encourage innovation.
NR 3 Third one is a joke, sure it’s fun but this is not a community for comedians and it does definitely not get me stoked to get out there and ride!!
Expected more from the guys at life cycles.
And yes this is my opinion and I do actually work with post production, design and so on, so I have basis for my opinions.
Hey Philip. You´re a professional designer, and your video was professional. But your jealousy is unprofessional. Instead of congratulation to winners you are angry on them. The anger doesn't belongs to design, its the way to lose every inspiration. And THIS is my opinion.
Sure your video was professional, and your expectations are high because your good at editing. Your video, was a mixture of nursery rhymes and Life Cycles clips. The third video has dinosaurs and Life Cycles clips, that's way better than nursery rhymes.
treevsbike: So just because they won I can’t have an opinion about them, how would the world look if people did not have strong opinions about things. And I do think you misunderstood me, I am not jealous at the winners, congratulations to them I just thought life cycles would bring something new to the table as they do with their movie. Most of the problems in this contest is not how good the videos are, it's more about the way they picked the winners and that the rules of the contest was not followed, most viewed and the 2min limit rule.
Third was the best, most original. First two were trying to fit the mold of current trends (though I do admit, they are slickly done). Third was cool - went their own direction, a bit of a throwback to the Kranked series... just dug it, so fun.
I think the 3rd barely qualifies as a re-cut. I was excited when I saw the intro, but once the TV was turned on it just seemed like a bad youtube video. There was barely any biking!
I really liked the first. Great job, you deserved the win.
The second one was really good too, although the transitions could use some variation. Still, better than what I could have done.
By God LifeCycles, this movie better be damn good.
Copy right infringement on the third, it was admittedly a good video but i wouldn't have given it anything other than made it go Viral!
The first one had a good intro, and a good, albeit cheesy, ending. The rest of the clips barely flowed with the music....they just seemed to be randomly thrown in.
And I dont even want to get started on the second.

Well just wanted to let you know Nishnash... its a great movie but make sure you keep in mind that its NOT a bike movie, its a movie about a BIKE. There really isn't as much riding as you may think. Just incredible everything. So much time, thought, and editing went into this one. Can't wait to buy it and show my friends and family. I saw the movie last night.
Haha thats what I'm hoping for, something that'll shake things. Wasn't expecting much riding at all, which was why I was so interested to see how they pulled it of.
I am pretty stoked to watch the movie again, when my Visa is up and Running for sure going to pre-order. Going to show my family, maybe they will get what Mtb is all about.
I DISAGREE WITH ALL WINNERS. Clearly Life Cycles needs to think about a new market for their style if they want to recruit more riders. These video's would never have any impact in an advertising community. They could never be broadcast quality. As one who works in advertising, I am very disappointed. Good Luck in the future Life Cycles. You'll need it.
When everybody will speak like this about this amazing contest, then it never be another one. Because of stupid people, they just can not live with results. Make own contest, where YOU gonna be the judge!
first good, 2nd the shaky fades piss me off too much. spoils it for me. using it twice would have been perfect. third was original by pirateing, wich i find cool, glad he/she won.
Haha you are hilarious!! Fine if some one goes over by 10sec of the time limit or so but by setting a limit you make people put more thought and effort in picking the best shots, being creative with the editing and I can assure you that that's the best way to distinguish between those who have spent time and effort in creating there videos and those who just tried to push in as much cool material as possible. The film/advertising world is all about deadlines, time limits, killing your darling and there by delivering a experience that is richer more creative with better quality.

Joe-fisher: I agree but I wouldn't put all the responsibility on Life cycles as pinkbike is the one that hosted the contest and we don't have insight in how much Life Cycles or pinkbike has been involved in the judging but clearly something has gone wrong and it shows in the picking of the winners and much more. (videos has gone over the maximum time limit of 2min is one example but that the third winner even got considered as a winner is the best example)
Meander Man why you think the maximum video time must be exact 2:00 ? "Life Cycles is launching to the world September 1st. The most anticipated movie of the year. See these never before seen clips to create your own 2 minute teaser". No words like "exact", "up to 2 minutes". This is an art the limits are in your head no in the rules. And the idea is to impress and to express, not to fallow.

Do you REALLY think it's supposed to be EXACTLY 2.00 minutes long? When people say 2 minutes, especially in something like this, it's typically ball park, as if you think about it, there is NOTHING specially about 2.00 minutes in a contest like this.

It's art. It's not about rules or a time code. Do you SERIOUSLY think that every video is supposed to be 2.00 long? It really does not matter. Lifecycle guys liked these videos the most, and that's what matters.

I do not have problems with winners they have done good job. But organisation was deplorable.
Yes, lifecycle guys are the judges. That means you have to impress them and their opinion picks the winner. It's simple. I don't think they care that your video is 2.00 and another one is 2.01. Most of the videos in the contest are not 2.00 so it's pretty self explanatory that it's a "ball park" number.

Rules are meant to be broken. Would art today in general be the same way, if artists in history always followed the rules. Nope. Your points are valid enough to be presented in a courtroom, but, we're not in a courtroom. Besides, do you think the "unprofessional delayers"(Quote is from some ignorant person) got bored of watching the same clips over and over? Hell yeah! I watched two, and two only. Who has time in a busy life to watch so many edited clips featuring such a wide variety of skill levels? These sweet vids are fresh off the editing room chopping block. There was a sick frame and tons of swag to win, to top it off bragging rights to be had.
The first and third videos are great. The second, was useless to me, as soon as I heard the song I stopped it. All I could think of was the Claw's section in ROAM. That section binds that song to it so well, the song's original use in a bike film trumps any recreation. Sorry dude who made the second video, if I was a judge, you wouldn't of even hit the top 500.
It makes sense that the winner got first for the work of recording all that audio, it made it alot more professional and I think that alone was a big enough advantage to bring it out first, I think it makes sense. The secong one however, I dont see anything special about that, its way overdone with effects and annoying crap
I agree, his video was my favorite by FAR. to not even be top three seems kinda wrong to me. I mean the third one was "different" but i turned it off half way through. Different strokes for different folks i guess, atomichatchet you had my vote!

First one matched the feel of Life Cycles so well. Very artistic. People don't realize how much the sounds actually add to the clip. Plus the narration was well done.
Second one looked like someone was just trying to cram as many hits as they could into 2 minutes. 3rd one was creative, but kinda stupid.
