^^^^I agree with ya tabletop. Yes Cam stomped one of the most redonkulous stunts i've seem, and Gee's Hip was incredible. but i'm sorry this is the rampage, and when i think rampage i think big mountain. Steep, gnar, Tech, not just buttery wood kickers and perfect landings. I think his run and a few others showed a better display of the 4 criteria. Leave the slopestyle at crankworx, and let rampage be the rampage.
Another agree on that one. The Rampage should stay big mountain freeride style. there's no need for wood. There's plenty of SS comps out there, let's have an event that showcases what a rider can do with his imagination and the unique natural terrain of Southern Utah. Having said that, it's still very cool to see these guys send it off the built features.
you think steep, gnar, tech ?? then Gee's line was by far the steepest and most gnar and tech.. he just made it look like nothing cause he went about MACH 9 down the whole thing. there was a portion of gee's line that was pretty much straight DOWN for 3-4 seconds.
I agree about the wood - BUT - even though I would rather it was not there in the ideal world, there is a good reason to have some. When it allows riders more access to more rock lines. For example, the Canyon Gap - which IMO was not built quite right this yeat (but what do I know), it allowed riders to go a different way. Although it didn't do a v good job of it cos it tore their nuts off and snapped their bikes. In the ideal world, this hill would have about double the vert, a major ridable line for each rider, perfect soil w the right moisture etc. But truth is, a little building does have the potential to open up exactly what we want to see. But they do have to avoid turning it into a bike park.
If they want DHers why not do a sort of Super Rampage. Two events on same day. One FR (any line, 2 runs). One DH (same line for all - 1 run timed). This would bring in more of the DH top names and make the entire event huge. Riders can enter FR, or DH, or both. Overall winner is the guy with the highest avg standing in both. For a tie, breaker is best FR run. You have a winner of each part of the comp. That way, two (or three) winners. Up to 9 guys get podiums. One champion. Gee gets to say he won Rampage without getting in the way of the FR side we prefer. Fans of both sides all get exactly what they want to see at the Super Rampage. Genius.
And this run didnt win......... how??? It had 40000 times more variety than Cam Zinks.... Who the f*ck judges this stuff anyways?? Claw got ripped off hard. This run was so "big mountain" I thought that was what this comp was all about...... obviously not because a single 360 won it... Might as well re-name it to Red Bull Rampage Slopestyle
maybe the best way to keep it Rampage is if they change the spot after two events. It would keep everyone creative and on their game. I know it just finished but I wonder if they have a new zone picked out for the next Rampage. They gotta keep it like a beautiful natural woman and not one with a whole lot of "enhancements". haha
Tabletop666, Zink pulled off the biggest 360 ever accomplished on a peddle bike man. If he didn't win something would be seriously wrong. Oh and speaking of "big mountain", you claim that claw should have taken first, yet Gee's run was more big mountain than anyone's because of the incredible speed, intensity, smoothness, and how huge he was going. If you're going to claim that the big mountain rider should have won then at least know what entails big mountain.
naw man, the rampage belongs at that very spot in Utah.....however, I do agree they should keep the building down to practically nothin and have the guys make their lines as they ride down....keep it as big mountain as possible.
one trick shouldn't win what is a "best run" contest, agreed the 3 was epic and deserving of a prize on it's own but there was nothing else in his run, gully should also have been well over lacondeguy, they hit identical lines but gully was far smoother and stylish, as for gee he went big, fast and smooth and was one of the few guys who really tamed the mountain and deserved his place IMO.
I think you're forgetting the 2 or 3 parts of his final run that he almost fell off. That really takes away from the fluidity criteria of the ride. If you would have listened to the judges, they said the biggest thing was making it look smooth. Gee takes that hip jump that no one else landed and made it look butter. Zink 3'd the biggest feature on course, and still had a huge fluid run to back it up. Judging was spot on
All judging aside, every rider who dropped in is a winner. The venue is so gnarly, that the only thing that seperated the podium from the rest was the ability to stay on the bike. Everyone ruled it, and every rider deserves a high fiver for even showing up. There are no chairlifts, no GLC, and certainly no buffed landings. Getting two runs over the course of a day is a feat all in itself.
Claw was 1.2pts behind G. And I bet they penalised him more than that for talking to everyone at the end instead of getting to the finish line. Rampage isn't a reg DH race. Should be about lines and insane stunting on huge terrain IMO. I also would have liked to see G at least try a 2nd run - even if it was only the same as his first.
ummmm hate to be the guy that points this out but this video has been cut together from two runs... i watched it live and im pretty sure that on his final run at the very top he almost came off but in this video he didnt and on his first run he didnt make it over the small piece after the wallride. its been cut together to make his run seem better and less sketchy at the top. i dont see why the sketch was epic... they should have left it in. f**king lame they cut it together though it was an epic run.
im sure im going to get mega -props for this one lol
Yeah, like it's mentioned on the YouTube video, this is just a quick fast gnarly highlight video. This is actually all the first run, the only run there was an onboard camera run in the whole comp
hahaha man they changed the last frame from the go pro cuz that run was the first run where his front tire clipped the take off on the last 360 drop...the start of the run where he landed the 3 he got bucked over his bars and hung on..now THAT would have been nasty to watch on go pro!
Lots of good debate in here. Claw's run was more impressive than Gee's for me, despite the massive and smooth hip gap at the end... But Claw was super sketch (as you would expect, that was nuts!) which has to be taken into account, while Gee was mega smooth. I don't think I'd ever want to judge one of these things, too much pressure! Regardless, Zink has pushed things to new levels trick/size wise.
My question to everyone: Is this 360 a bigger deal than Claw's at Crankworx many years go? Zink's may be bigger, but Darren's was mind blowing at the time.
personally thought that bears run was so skilled in line choice and technical ability to carry it off, a different level to the rest. agreed gee's run was super smooth as was GC's. and zinks 3 drop was jaw dropping, so i think you make a valid point.
in my mind the claw is on a different level to everyone else and doing it his way. the same stunts and drops as everyone else, but line choice and the skill to do it was simply remarkable
i also think gee shouldnt have been in the top 3 maybe even 5. there wasnt anything that special about his run its like the whole thing of tony hawk always used to win even if he didnt do anything that amazing again but with gee instead. :/
im sorry, but people saying zink shouldnt have won... are retards, he 360 off a 50 by 50ft gap where you cannot even see the landing until you are literally half way through the jump... a well deserved win by zink who is killing it this year.
One of the main differences between Claw's run and all the others was that Claw built his line from scratch. He built it by himself with the help of his friends 5 days before the event. Not a single other person rode it, or tired to ride it. The majority of Gee's line and Cam Zink's line were built over the last 30 days by paid red bull staff and builders. There were some original sections in Zink's and Gee's lines, but nothing that came close to the sniper precision of the Claw!
f#cking kids these days? ur 18! c'mon! I dont want to take any credit away from zink, i think he's a better rider than the claw, he went HUGE and pushed the envelope, mad props, but the rest of his run was pretty weak. The claw had an incredibly technical and unique line worked out, little sketch at the beginning but he didnt crash, and after that he rode smooth and stylish. Its a close call, i just think the entirety of the run should count for more than one huge huck.
Claw's line was hand built by Claw and his friends 5 days before the event in the gnarest of conditions. Zink's line was built over 30 days with tractors and carpenters. Both lines are sick, both guys were amazing......everyone should just pick their poison and admire both styles for what they are. Simply Amazing Athetes....period. To say one is better than the other would be foolish. Both lines set precedence.
I thought Claw's save was up there close to the 3s for incredible riding! I think I have only seen one save as good and that was at Rampage on a squirrelly 3 off a cliff w super-steep and loose landing. Sure, smoothness/control is vitally important. But maybe they should have a way to score ANYTHING that is absolutely amazing - like that save. Surely it deserved as many props in the scoring system as it is getting on the boards. And it did represent SUPREME control - to bring that back together. On the one hand he got ouy of shape, on the other he pulled it all back in in a totally amazing way. That WAS control - pushing the limits but holding it together. Props. The run was better for the save than it would have been if it didn't have it. Most likely that great bit of work cost him 2nd. That or talking at the bottom instead of racing of that flat bottom section that shouldn't IMO even be part of the course. Finish gate should be inches after that last wall-ride. If it was, Claw would be higher. Most of the talk seems to be is about Zink and D Claw. Most of the other talk seems to be defending G's position or apologetics for his lack of 2nd run.
Ya Romo was the one who built the line into the quarter. I helped him water down that line before he went for it. Romo is a super cool guy to talk to, I was bummed that he crashed and didnt make it into the Finals.
Gees run was SMOOOOOTH, Claws run was BIG BURLY and INSANE! Even though Claws run was a little hairy up top he still should have took 2nd over Gee. Bourdo and Claw were the only ones going off the top of the 2nd Starting gate the GNARLY way and I know that Zink and Gee could not have rode that line!
Zinks 3 off the Icon Sender was unreal to watch, and MAD MAD Props to him for that! But the rest of his run was not as Burly or Gnar as Claws!
Watching it in person I had goosebumps on my arms watching these guys and it is something I will never forget! RED BULL RAMPAGE 2010!!!!!!!
I would have loved to also seen the 360 from Claw's perspective - wish that had been edited into the clip, too. Amazing run - stuff doesn't usually look that gnarly on head cam, but that shiz was steep & big! Awesome run, Claw!!!!!
The way I, see it is that cameras can never get the full effect of these events and that the best way to determine and be a judge is to actually Be There and witness what these guys are actually riding and how big they are actually going...All in all these are the very few hand full of riders that go this Big and push the limits of what can be done with a mountain Bike... I would like to go to a Mountain Bike park choose their best riders and see how many of them would actually go this big... really got to see and then ask your self the question!
The video says "highlights". More often that not, when something is labeled "highlights" I think it means clips from some bangers. That helmet shot is not intended to represent any one of Claw's runs. That is why it is titled "highlights" I have a feeling that we will see more video slowly trinkle out as the weeks go on. Red Bull does a good job of controlling footage releases. Not exactly the easiest place in the world to film, when riders only make 1-2 runs a day over a venue 2 miles wide out in the middle of nowhere.
This is def the 1st run. If you freeze it at 1:18 you can see the front wheel hit the lip on the 360. Cut to someone else filming the landing of the 2nd 3. It is a shame that there was no footage from the cam on the 2nd run. But - here is a trolling com - maybe he cleaned the 2nd run cos he didn't have the cam! Lol. That is a joke so pls don't dis me.
sick run zink and claw deserved the podium. wasn't it romo who built that line into the quarter that gee rode?it was a shame that he got injured would have been good to see him on the podium too.
already exist's... i just think the event should be rider judged, or that it should be former rider judged, if bender, simmons, and ay mccaul who was injured judged it would've been really cool getting a perspective from two freechuckers and a current slope rider. sure they may have some bias but y'know... or having the builders judge would be cool
ok, how about they let the riders judge instead of independent judges? They're the only ones on the mountain who know what it really takes & understand the true difficulty anyway, right?
Love the way this was so raw and uncut. For anyone watching this keep in mind that GoPro's wide angle tends to make terrain look less steep and jumps smaller. It does accentuate the sharpness of ridgelines so tends to make things look more exposed. On the whole, GoPro footage makes trails look less intimidating than they really are
This video definitely makes his run look much smoother than it was. Props for a unique line even though it was the same as the last RBR's he's attended. I think his 3rd was well deserved. Glad he was able to make this event after his crash!
my opinion, he deserved second place... he wasn't as clean as Gee or Zink, which clearly cost him the win, but the creative and technical aspects throughout the whole run made for a more enjoyable run, despite Gee's balls out step down!
This should have been rider judged, when you have someone like aaron chase judging it makes me question who the hell would make such a decision. Chase is a street/dirt/SS legend, but he's not a big mountain rider. Cmon, seriously redbull? Runs like vanderhams and others weren't given enough credit.
This was so sick but Bearclaw would never have the balls to 3 that huge drop like cam zink, i think he won fairly and gees run was so nice, smooth and he landed that sketchy hip wallride, the judges did a fine job
It's because Claw was under the impression that it wasn't a one hit contest. Zincs run doesn't compare to Claws.!!!!! This contest is changing , the judging showed that!!!!
Don't forget that Zink ate sh*t hard trying that 360 earlier. He ate it so hard that it could have been a contest ender for him. The 360 was a feat in itself. It was burly and will go down in history as one of the gnarliest hucks ever on a bike, period. Regardless what the judges are feel or think, we the people, will vote with our voices. I say it is a tie. Two different styles on two completely different runs, both worth their weight in gold.
@Commentpolice. You are right about changing. I thought the Claw hanging on at the top was almost as tough a move as the 360! Lol. It was also a world first - riding the top one-footed side-saddle! Should have added points for that save. It's gradually becoming more of a DH race. That doesn't favour the FRiders. I personally would give more props to some of the guys that crashed hard trying to push FR than a podium finish for DH. But they don't get a prize other than props and they're the ones all busted up! So PROPS to the busted up guys and those that were able to get up for a 2nd run!
everyone saying this is what rampage is and isn't about stfu and stop bitching about slopestyle. if any of the other riders had the balls and the skills to 3 the sender, they would of and they would have won. zink set the bar soo much higher than everyone else it wasnt even funny, gee also did something no one else did... darren had a sweet line, but rode sketch, and did a 3 less then half the size of cams. seems fair to me, this isnt a popularity contest.... f*cking kids these days.
Zink deserves best trick and 2nd place. The claw's run was big mountain at its best, a little sketch at the beginning but he should get extra points for holding it together. Rampage is not a best trick, DH or slopestyle contest. I think they should have a re-run
I dunno, maybe the solution to this contest is to add a seperate award for the best trick. Cam definately deserved it, but Claw's and Gee's overall runs were better in my opinion.
Which of G's runs are you talking about? 1st or 2nd? I only saw the 1st and to me it looked boring compared to most others. His 2nd run must have been WAY better than his first to score more than Claw. Lol.
Everyone needs to stop bitching about it being judged like a "slopestyle" comp. They have thrown tricks since the begining of the rampage. (Suicide no handers, no footers etc.) Zink is just taking it to the next level. And he deseverved to beat Claw they both did 360s Zinks was just WAY bigger which is what rampage is all about. His run had less variety but what other feature was he going to 3 off that would have been that big besides the canyon gap?
Do all the tricks you want but leave out the wood features and do them on the lines you built just like all the other rampages. If you must have ss type features at rampage put them in a side event and judge it seperatly. The ss features are obviously causing a divide amongst the actual riders that want to keep the event strictly big mountain.
Was not off the CG was of the OS. Seemed the run in for the CG was barely long enough for anyone to get enough speed to clear it. By the time they were in control on that loose stuff, they were already out of space to get the speed.
sick like all of the riders. but less speed and much less flow and control than gee. podium should be like this: 1.zink 2.gee 3.andreu without his 360 zink would be out, but the judges had to honour his balls! totally agree
Totally. I reckon Lacondeguy gave him a run for is money too. They should have DQd Gee for refusing to attempt a 2nd run! Maybe after the first, he had no clean shorts? Rofl. Props to Zink for not only doing a 2nd run, but trying that same trick after what it did the first time - and pulling it off. Zink and Claw def deserved to be up there.
are you trying to be funny... you should probebly just give up on life if thats the case. you havent got anything else going for you and im sorry i have had to be the one that told you this. better to hear it now that latter when you think your funny in a public place. theres no shame in it just find the nearest window, look out of it and then ask yourself. is all really worth it?
no, Gee went really big, really fast, really smooth. Claw ripped it up really well, but it wasn't as smooth as Gee, and the gap to quarter that gee landed is probably crazier then a small 360... if there is such a thing as a small 360.
this video is his first run with a ton of jump cuts so you dont see his mistakes from the first run. and the video of the 360 was shot from someone else's camera. kind of depressing cuz his second run was off the hook. on the first drop it cuts him going right into the wall ride, its hard to notice but there was allot more riding between him and the wall ride. also after the road gap as soon as he lands there is a jump cut to the 360 where he is supposed to eat shit but they switched cameras to make it look like its part of the same run. MALARKEY
I agree. This should have been the winning run. There were four things that the riders were being judged on. Darren was THE ONLY rider to touch all of them. I agree that Cam Zinc's 3 was a truly historic moment, but that's all his run was. It didn't meet the criteria that was set for the judges to watch. Also, Darren's score took a very long time to be decided. That pretty much shows that they really had to think about it. After Cam Zinc's run, they probably thought no one else was going to do better. Then Barrcloth dropped in. I think it really threw them off. When it comes down to it, ALL of the runs were sick! Just riding the course straight is something I'd never do, so being third amongst the most elite riders in the world is little to be bummed about.
I agree, but if you have people riding it hard for a month solid it is going to get tracked. Plus, we don't want guys bailing on the ordinary bits and having their run ruined and the wrong guys getting on the podium. Plus, it's a desert, once it's tracked it doesn't return to normal before next year. And we can't have guys FRing everywhere cos then everything will be tracked, erroded and wrecked. So, in the ideal world sure, but the trails between hits are inevitable. Esp with speed a factor in the scoring. You are not going to go off the trail and ride over talus when it will slow you down and cost points. So they all take the path of least resistance and that's the trail. Self fulfilling prophesy. I don't know why timing is a factor anyway. Should remove the timing aspect.
